On History, Knowledge, and Cosmology

It’s said that history is written by the victor. This proverb is especially true in this setting, in that the Iron Kingdom and the divine nations that came later have controlled much of what is known about the past, particularly the Summoning Wars and the Arcane Empire. Furthermore, great volumes of knowledge were purged from history, as books and people were destroyed. Great swathes of Arcane knowledge were lost to the ancients, and the Arcane Empire that stands today was only able to save a small fraction from the destruction. Even so, the Arcane Empire has destroyed some knowledge of their own, particularly pertaining to summoning. Today, it is difficult for a scholar to know what ancient writings are true and what are fabricated.

The cosmology of the setting is believed to follow the traditional D&D Great Wheel, but confirmation of this fact is left to ancient tomes that have been able to survive the ages. Those that exist are carefully guarded, so even a studious scholar may know little more than a few details about any given plane. What has been confirmed, though, is that the Ethereal and Shadow planes do exist, and they are coexistent. There is also great evidence of the inner elemental planes, to the point that the theory that the Material Plane is the convergance of the six is widely accepted in academia. The party’s journey into what is believed to be the Astral Plane has sparked interest among scholars.
